Kiln Dried Firewood

What are kiln dried logs?

Kiln Dried Logs are wood that has been force-dried in ovens and not dried naturally (Seasoned) for a certain period of time. The aim is to bring the logs to a moisture content of below 20%, which is necessary for optimal combustion.

The time it takes to dry logs can vary depending on the drying system used. Ususally in a chamber at around 60 to 70° C, it usually takes around 7 to 10 days. At Firelogs.co.uk we have an efficient drying system than most other firewood suppliers. Our kiln processes wood in approximately 2-3 days, removing over a third of the water content!

How do your store kiln dried logs?

We advise storing your logs under cover to keep the rain out, but don’t worry about a little moisture on the outside of the log. If your logs do get a little wet during shipping or storage the moisture quickly evaporates from the surface of the logs. The nice thing about kiln dried logs is that they remove most of the moisture from inside the log.

The best place to store our firewood would be in a log cabin. A garage is fine as long as the logs have adequate airflow. Please avoid all damp storage areas. If the wood can’t be stored under a shelter and although we don’t recommend it, you can store the kiln dried logs in the bulk bags that the logs are shipped in. This would require you to cover them with a tarp. Please note the bulk bags are showerproof and not waterproof.

Are kiln dried logs worth it?

Yes, of course, more often than not they are always more expensive than seasoned logs. The logs are ready to burn and most of the water has already been removed for you. Due to the logs being Kiln dried and having a significant amount of water content removed the log burns at a much higher heat. When you burn in an efficient stove, you end up using a lot less wood resulting in Kiln Dried Logs being much better value for money. You also never have the cost of removing tar from your chimney or fireplace!

Which is the best kiln dried wood?

All of our wood has been sourced within the UK (Specifically West Yorkshire) so of course we say that British sourced wood is the best kind of firewood for a number of reasons:

  • Reduction of the “log miles” and thus a reduction in CO2 emissions during transport.
  • Supporting UK forestry and jobs relating to this industry.
  • Ensure the proper management of UK forests improving the general health and well-being of the forest’s flora & fauna.
  • Reducing the risk of disease transmission from imported timber.

Please be careful when choosing what firewood to buy.
